PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Waikare School consists of two classrooms with a cloak bay joining the, staffroom, office, library, and three storage sheds. An original school building is still on the site. Other amenities include a swimming pool, sports field, tennis court, semi-completed adventure playground, barbecue area, jungle gym, sandpit and grass playing area.
The grounds contain a number of fine trees and gardens. It is a visually aesthetic environment. This is maintained by the grounds person and voluntary labour.
STAFFING
There are two teachers employed presently, divided at the Year One to Year Three and Year Four to Year Eight levels. The teachers aide works on a daily basis with administration, library, individual children and assisting the junior class.
STUDENTS
The school has an almost totally Maori population. An increasing number of children are coming through the Kohunga Reo system before attending school. Most of the pupils have members of their family within the same classroom and the school is a close knit group. They have been brought up to feel a responsibility towards the younger members, seen as part of their extended family.
There is a general enthusiasm for physical activities and a strong motivation to achieve competitive excellence. Children are fit and show a high degree of skill at various sports.
